January 2, 2009 Gwynedd-Mercy 70, Johns Hopkins 56 KISSIMEE, FL. – Gwynedd-Mercy got the New Year off on the right foot with a 70-56 win over Johns Hopkins in the first game of the 2009 ECAC Holiday Classic at the Walt Disney Wide World of Sports Complex. The Griffins (6-3) only led 36-35 at halftime but used a big 19-6 run with nine minutes in the game to pull away, limiting the Johns Hopkins to just free throws. Junior Kate Wisniewski (Newtown Square, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) tied a career-high with 20 points (13 in the second half), as she was one of four Griffins to score in double figures. Gwynedd led by as much as eight from the start but saw the Blue Jays (1-7) respond, scoring the next 14 points to claim its biggest edge, 24-18 with 7:33 in the first stanza. Senior Kristy Cramp (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) hit one of her three treys on the day to restore the GM lead, 30-29, with just over four minutes in the period. Johns Hopkins would score the first six points of the second half to go up 41-35, but Wisniewski answered with six straight-points to give the Griffins the lead for good. Cramp finished with 14 points, while Bridget Morrin (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert) and Jackie Dooley (Cheltenham, Pa./Cheltenham) each chipped in 11 apiece. Morrin added five assists while sophomore Lauren Rosar (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) collected a game-high eight rebounds. Gwynedd concludes their Florida trip with a matchup against Goucher College on Sunday, starting at 5:30 p.m. |
