2009 Outlook The 2009 edition of the Gwynedd-Mercy Softball team will not look to rest on the laurels of a very successful 2008 campaign, one in which the team qualified for the playoffs for the first time in over five years and made its first postseason appearance, playing in the ECAC Tournament. Third-year head coach Ron Smull has a nice balance of senior leaders and young promising players that will look to even greater heights. His seniors, Michelle Bissell, Ashley Bowie, and twins Jenn and Rachel Smull all have been a part of the transition to playoff contender in the newly reformed and renamed Colonial States Athletic Conference. Bissell and Rachel Smull are infield staples and will welcome back sophomore Nicole DelGuerico at third. Freshman Danyelle Lemm will look to step in right away. Jenn Smull has been the anchor at catcher and will help tutor a pitching staff made up of Heather Morgan, Sue Miller, and transfer Brianna Seckinger. Bowie, versatile to play the infield, is joined by junior Nicole Cassidy in the outfield. A plethora of freshmen in Ali Gurko, Samantha Minner, Caitlin Crowther, and Nicole Paleologus, all will be counted on. The schedule has the team kicking off the season in Florida at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee. They’ll play non-league opponents such as the College of New Jersey, Rowan, Ursinus, and Catholic, and will square off against former conference foes Alvernia and Eastern. The CSAC slate is just as tough as the league welcomes new members, Keystone, Philadelphia Biblical, and Baptist Bible. The CSAC Tournament begins on Wednesday, April 29th.
