GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. - A five-goal spurt early in
the second half helped erase a deficit as Stevens Tech defeated
Gwynedd-Mercy, 16-12, in a quarterfinal game of the 2007 ECAC South
Tournament Wednesday afternoon.
The Griffins' Lauren Sheils (Hanover, Md./Archbishop
Spaulding) netted a game-high six goals but just one in the second
half. Liz Mather led the Ducks with three goals and four assists,
while teammates Katie Lalli and Kara Borzillo each added four scores
apiece.
Sheils' free-position goal with under a minute left
in the first stanza gave the Griffins an 8-7 lead at the break.
Junior Kalli Bass (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh)
scored 59 seconds into the second period but it would be the last
score over the next 17 minutes as Stevens (12-7) rallied with five-straight
goals.
Bass added two assists while junior Meg Volz
(Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood) chipped in three goals.
Stevens advances to the semifinal round where they
will take on top-seeded Cabrini this Saturday on the campus of McDaniel
College. The Griffins end the 2007 season at 12-6 under seventh-year
head coach Sarah Quintois.
