GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. – Gwynedd-Mercy scored three times in the first half and had to hold off a late charge from Cabrini in the Griffins’ 3-2 Pennsylvania Athletic Conference win over the Cavs Tuesday afternoon.
Senior Ashley Blackwell (Mohrsville, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) led GM (4-3 3-2 PAC) with a goal and an assist.
Blackwell set up Amanda Reppert (Oley, Pa./Boyertown) just 4:22 into the game for a 1-0 lead. It was the sophomore’s team-leading ninth tally on the season.
It was 2-0 after Blackwell converted a penalty stroke less than three minutes later with freshman Rachel Collier (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) making it 3-0 right before halftime.
After a goalie change at the half, Cabrini (0-8, 0-3 PAC) responded with a goal in the 44th minute from Allie Wood. Melissa Benedetti cut to a 3-2 deficit with a score just five minutes later to make things interesting.
Gwynedd then turned up the pressure, getting five of their eight penalty corners in the second half, creating numerous scoring opportunities.
The Griffins will host Misericordia here on Thursday in a PAC matchup. Gametime is 4 p.m.
