Griffins' late rally spoiled in overtime

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. - York spoiled Gwynedd-Mercy's
comeback as April McFarland scored 6:44 into the first overtime
as the Griffins fell, 3-2, to the Spartans Tuesday afternoon on
senior day.
The Griffins scored two goals in the last 10 minutes
of regulation, including Janine Reiner's (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford)
tally in the 77th minute, to force the extra period.
McFarland notched two goals on the day; her first
goal in the 10th minute and with teammate Jami Hassler's unassisted
tally right before time expired in the first half, gave York (11-8)
a 2-0 lead at the break.
In the second stanza, Gwynedd-Mercy (7-10) rallied,
putting together eight penalty corners after just three in the first
half. Aubrey Wolf (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) cut the
deficit to 2-1 in the 51st minute as the freshman scored her first
goal of the season.
Senior goalie Kaitlin Pope (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop
Wood) made seven saves, suffering her first loss of the season.
Spartan keeper Anne Spencer made four stops.
Before the game, the coaching staff and players
honored their five seniors: Reiner, Pope, Melissa Burks (Harleysville,
Pa./Souderton), Erin Hill (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford)
and Katie Donovan (Conshohocken, Pa./Kennedy-Kenrick).
Gwynedd-Mercy will close out the 2006 season on
Thursday with a non-league game at Moravian starting at 4 p.m.
