Burks, Blackwell lead Griffins past Lions

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. - Senior Melissa Burks (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) scored a goal and assisted on two others to help Gwynedd-Mercy defeat Albright, 3-1, Tuesday afternoon in a non-league contest.

Junior Ashley Blackwell (Mohrsville, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) also scored and added an assist, as the Griffins scored three unanswered goals.

The Lions (1-2) got on the board in the 12th minutes as Angela Gardner gave Albright a 1-0 lead.

Burks would score just before the end of the half, off a penalty corner with an assist from Blackwell to tie game at 1-1.

In the 47th minute, Gwynedd (2-1) got the go-ahead goal from Blackwell and then added an insurance goal later in the 56th minute from sophomore Nicole Dowling (Jamison, Pa./Central Bucks South).

Junior Lauren Monte (Perkasie, Pa./Christopher Dock) picked up the win in goal, making two saves on the day. Albright keeper Brittany Simpson posted three stops.

The Griffins return to action on Thursday, as they host Rosemont in a Pennsylvania Athletic Conference game at 4 p.m.
