Griffins withstand late rally

Box Score

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. - Goals from freshman Nicole Dowling (Jamison, Pa./Central Bucks South) and sophomore Ashley Blackwell (Mohrsville, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) were enough as Gwynedd-Mercy withstood a late charge by Swarthmore, defeating the Garnet, 2-1, Thursday afternoon in non-league action.

Dowling scored her fourth goal on the season unassisted just 6:40 into the game. It became 2-0 in the second half when Blackwell netted her seventh tally of the year with just over 15 minutes in the contest.

Swarthmore (6-7) cut the GMC lead to 2-1 on a penalty shot by Summer Spicer with 2:46 in regulation.

The goalie tandem of junior Kaitlin Pope (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and sophomore Lauren Monte (Perkasie, Pa./Christopher Dock) combined to make two saves. Garnet keeper Melissa LaVan made four stops.

Gwynedd-Mercy (7-9) plays at Cabrini in a rescheduled PAC game this Saturday, October 22nd at 10 a.m.
