Keith Mondillo
|
Gwynedd-Mercy College has become a nationally recognized
women's basketball power since the hiring of Head Coach Keith Mondillo
in 1995.
Improving each season, his team in 1996-97 won four more games than
his first season, finishing 13-11 overall and 9-7 in the conference,
earning their first ever conference tournament berth and a Pennsylvania
Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honor.
The Griffins received their first-ever at-large
bid to the NCAA Tournament in 1998-99 after having been ranked in
the Mid-Atlantic Region all season. Mondillo was named coach of
the year for the second-straight season. He led the Griffins to
a program record 24 wins. and a perfect 16-0 in PAC play.
In only his third year, Mondillo's team ran off
the first of five-straight 20-win seasons and has played in eight
PAC Championships, winning back-to-back PAC titles in 1999-00, and
2000-01. During the 2001-02 season, Mondillo led a very young team
to a first place regular season finish with a 15-1 PAC record and
an overall record of 22-6 while making it to the PAC Championship
game. In 2002-03, the Griffins again were the preseason favorite
but started the season with just one win in its first eight games
before launching an amazing 18-2 run to win the PAC Championship
and receive yet another berth into the NCAA Tournament. A fifth
NCAA Tournament appearance in 2003-04 and an eighth-straight PAC
title game appearance in 2004-05 proves the Griffins are consistenly
knocking on the door for postseason play.
Coach Mondillo played high school basketball at
Archbishop Kennedy from 1986-90. After playing his freshman year
at Eastern College, he transferred to Beaver College and finished
his career as a Scarlet Knight. His first year out of college, Mondillo
served as an assistant coach for the men's basketball team at Gwynedd-Mercy
before heading back to his alma matter for the 1994-95 season. After
only one year, Mondillo was asked to take the helm of the women's
basketball program at Gwynedd-Mercy where he remains today as the
winningest coach in school history with a winning percentage of
.717 and 196 wins.
Keith Mondillo resides in Schwenksville, Pa. with
his wife Jen, new-born son Chase, and dogs Cal Ripken and Hoops.
