Three players in double figures lift Griffins

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. - Senior Jackie Dougherty
(Roslyn, Pa./Abington) notched her first double-double of the season
as Gwynedd-Mercy prevailed, 74-61, over Widener in the first day
of the 2007 Gwynedd-Mercy Women's Classic at the Griffin Complex.
Dougherty tallied 18 points and 11 rebounds while
senior Ashley Vandiver (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan)
and junior Karen Tierney (Philadelphia, Pa./Kennedy-Kenrick)
each added 14 points respectively. Vandiver also grabbed eight boards
while Tierney dished out eight assists as the Griffins (8-2) led
from start to finish.
Stephanie Bixby had team highs of 13 points and
15 rebounds for Widener (4-7). Kelley Guarrera added 12 and Megan
Sipple chipped in 11 for the Pioneers.
Gwynedd raced out early as two Tierney free throws
made it an 18-5 GM lead. Widener got it down to just 30-24 at halftime.
Becky Tyler's bucket cut the lead to 34-33 early
in the second before back-to-back buckets from Dougherty and Vandiver
helped restore the lead for good.
The Griffins hit on 39.3% (24-of-61) shooting and
outrebounded Widener, 41-39.
Gwynedd-Mercy will face Ursinus tomorrow on the
final day of the 2007 Gwynedd-Mercy Women's Classic at 4 p.m.
