# 3 New York Univ. 72, #25 Gwynedd-Mercy 60
2007 NCAA Division III Tournament
Griffins give valiant effort, come up short in the Big Apple

Box Score

NEW YORK - #25 (ESPN/USA Today) Gwynedd-Mercy lost 72-60 to #3 New York University in the second round of the 2007 NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament Saturday night in Manhattan. With the loss, the Griffins end the season 26-3 while the Violets go to 25-2 and advance to next weekend's Sweet 16.

Despite two double-digit deficits in each half, the Griffins rallied to get within five points twice with the latter coming with just over two minutes left in the game

Freshman Jackie Dooley (Cheltenham, Pa./Cheltenham) led the Griffins with 14 points and nine boards off the bench. Junior Karen Tierney (Philadelphia/Kennedy-Kenrick) added 13 points.

NYU's Jessica McEntee scored 22 of her 34 points in the second half and pulled down 16 boards.

In the first half, scoring was a premium as both teams forced turnovers and played top-notch defense. Dooley's bucket in the paint gave GM a 7-5 lead four minutes into the game. But over the next six minutes, the Griffins didn't hit a field goal and saw their lead go to a 14-7 hole after two McEntee free throws. Later a 9-0 run opened up a 25-12 lead with 4:34 in the half after a three-pointer from Gena Brown. Dougherty's three-pointer and Kristian Woodridge's (Abington, Pa./Abington) 27-footer at the buzzer got the Griffins within 30-20 at the half.

NYU used an 11-2 run midway in the second frame go up by as much as 17 and looked to break the game open. Gwynedd answered with a 15-2 spurt over a five minute span to pull within 63-58 with 2:34 after two Tierney free-throws.

But the tide turned for good when the Griffins were called for an offensive foul after a defensive stop and the Violets' Brown struck again from downtown with a three-pointer on the ensuing possession to go up 66-58 with 1:40 on the clock. NYU then went 6-for-6 from the line the rest of the way to ice the game.
