Second-half surge lifts Griffins to win in
home opener

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. - Senior Ashley Vandiver
(Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) scored 10 of her team-high 13
points in the second half to help Gwynedd-Mercy to a 71-51 Pennsylvania
Athletic Conference win over Misericordia Saturday afternoon at
the Griffin Complex
The senior was one of four Griffins to finish in
double figures. Senior Michelle Sgrillo (Philadelphia, Pa./Cardinal
Dougherty) totaled 12 points and 10 rebounds for her first career
double-double while Jackie Dougherty (Roslyn, Pa./Abington)
chipped in 12 and Kristy Cramp (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell
Valley) added 10 respectively.
Sgrillo's jumper with 2:45 left in the first stanza
gave GM a six-point lead. But the Cougars outscored the Griffins,
8-0 to close the half and take a 30-28 lead at the break.
Free throws from junior Kristian Woodridge (Abington,
Pa./Abington) and Vandiver midway through the second half broke
42-42 tie and give Gwynedd the lead for good. Vandiver also added
six rebounds and five blocked shots.
The Griffins (3-1, 1-0 PAC) then used an 11-0 run
later in the period to lead by as much as 15 points.
Lacey DeGraw led all scorers, netting 19 points
for Misericordia (2-3, 1-1 PAC). Amy Hughes added 11 as the Cougars
were outscored in the second half, 43-21.
Gwynedd-Mercy returns to action on Monday as they
travel to Marywood for a PAC tilt starting at 6 p.m.
