GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd-Mercy defeated Cabrini, 68-61, Saturday night in the finals of the 2007 Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Tournament to win their second-straight league crown. Tournament MVP Michelle Sgrillo (Philadelphia/Cardinal Dougherty), right, scored 13 second-half points including a trio of three-pointers in the victory. The senior finished with 15 points. Teammate Karen Tierney (Philadelphia/Kennedy-Kenrick) netted a game-high 19 points and Ashley Vandiver (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) chipped in 14 for Gwynedd (25-2). The first half saw neither team lead by more than four points as the period featured seven lead changes. After Cabrini ran off a 7-0 run to take a 26-23 lead with under four minutes in the stanza, the Griffins responded by closing the half on a 6-0 spurt to lead 29-26 at the break. The Cavs (19-8) battled ahead for a five-point lead as Katie Walk hit a three-pointer early in the second to cap a 12-2 run. But the Griffins rallied and tied it 42-42 with 11 minutes to go as Beccie Strohecker (Hatboro Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) completed a three-point play, hitting a layup and drawing a foul. From there Sgrillo hit three of her treys over a four-minute span with her last coming with 4:47 left to give the Griffins a nine-point lead. Kayleen Smith was one of three Cavs in double figures finishing with 16 points. Deana DiAmico scored 11 and Katie Finfrock netted 10. Casey Kyler pulled down 18 rebounds. The Griffins, who also won their 18th game in a
row, earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Gwynedd will find out who and where they will play on Monday morning.
