Griffins rally, remain unbeaten in PAC play

READING, PA - Gwynedd-Mercy battled back from a
double-digit first half deficit to remain unbeaten in league play
as the Griffins prevailed 81-77 over Alvernia Monday evening.
Junior Karen Tierney (Philadelphia/Kennedy-Kenrick)
scored 20 points while teammate Jackie Dougherty (Roslyn,
Pa./Abington) scored 16 of her 18 points in the second stanza to
help Gwynedd to its 12th win in a row.
The Griffins (19-2, 13-0 PAC) were down 27-15 with
seven minutes before halftime, but a 12-0 run over the next three
minutes evened things up. Tierney would hit a three-pointer with
three ticks left for a 38-36 GM lead at the break.
Gwynedd led by no more than six points throughout
the second frame as the Crusaders (12-9, 10-3 PAC) kept it close.
Alvernia would get to within one point twice under two minutes in
regulation, but GM was able to hit 6-of-6 from the free-throw line
to help sweep the regular season series.
Senior Ashley Vandiver netted 14 points and
pulled down 12 rebounds for her second double-double on the year.
Gwynedd-Mercy shot under 35% (24-of-69) for the game, but outrebounded
Alvernia, 49-33.
Kerry Higgs scored a game-high 30 points and teammate
Lauren Fortna added 27 for the Crusaders.
Gwynedd-Mercy will host Neumann in PAC action this
Thursday starting at 6 p.m.
