GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. - Ashley Vandiver (Philadelphia,
Pa./Archbishop Ryan) netted 29 points to help lead Gwynedd-Mercy
to a 71-59 non-league win over Albright Saturday afternoon at the
Griffin Complex.
The senior also pulled down 10 rebounds for her
first double-double of the season notching three steals and two
blocks, and also went a perfect 11-for-11 from the free-throw line.
The Griffins (6-1) trailed for most of the contest
before a late comeback helped GM to its fifth-straight win.
Annie McMahon led the Lions (5-4) with 16 points
and Jacqueline Hardwick added 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Trailing just 30-26 at the half, Gwynedd fell more
behind as the deficit grew to double digits. GM responded with a
9-0 run capped by two free-throws to cut the lead to 40-39 with
12 minutes to play. The Griffins scrapped and fought over the next
eight minutes, with a key three pointer from junior Kristian
Woodridge (Abington, Pa./Abington) and a driving layup by junior
Karen Tierney (Philadelphia, Pa./Kennedy-Kenrick) to take
the lead for good with 4:32 left. A 15-4 run to close the game accounted
for the final margin.
Tierney netted 11 points, all in the second half,
and added seven assists. Senior Michelle Sgrillo (Philadelphia,
Pa./Cardinal Dougherty) also reached double-figures, netting 10
points with six boards.
This was the second meeting between the schools
this year. The Griffins and Lions met in the first game of the season-opening
Kean University Tip-Off Tournament, where Gwynedd prevailed, 61-59.
Gwynedd-Mercy plays in the 2006 Amerisport Land
