UNION, N.J. - Sophomore Kristy Cramp (Pennington,
N.J./Hopewell Valley) scored a game-high 20 points, but her layup
with just 12 seconds left helped lift Gwynedd-Mercy to a 61-59 season-opening
win over Albright Saturday afternoon in the first game of the 2006
Kean University Tip-Off Tournament.
Kramp, last season's PAC Rookie of the Year, went
6-for-9 from three-point range in the game and added four assists
and three steals. Senior Ashley Vandiver (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop
Ryan) chipped in 13 points with five boards, four steals, and two
blocks.
Kramp's trey with 5:20 left in the first half, staked
the Griffins to an eight-point lead, but the Lions used a 13-4 run
to close the stanza to lead 33-32 at the break.
Back and forth the two teams went in the second
half, with no team leading by more than six points. Gwynedd led
59-54 with 3:06 to play before Albright scored the next five points
to tie the contest at 59-59 with just over a minute in regulation.
Kramp's bucket down low, off a feed from junior Karen Tierney
(Philadelphia, Pa./Kennedy-Kenrick), helped break the tie for
good.
Tierney dished out a game-high seven assists.
Jaqueline Hardwick led the Lions 18 points an 11
rebounds.
Gwynedd-Mercy takes on the host Cougars of Kean
tomorrow in the championship game at 3 p.m.
