2007 GMC Women's Classic
Ursinus 72, Misericordia 60
GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. Mary Kate Daley scored
a career-high 27 points, including 17 in the first half to lead
Ursinus past Misericordia in the first game of the Gwynedd-Mercy
Classic on Wednesday night.
Carolyn Konstanzer also had a career night, adding
16 points on 7-for-9 shooting from the floor to help the Bears (6-3)
get the victory in their first contest in 2007. Sarah Hennessey
was the third player in double figures, adding 11 points and five
assists along with four steals.
Amy Hughes paced the Cougars (4-5) with a team-high
16 points, six rebounds and five assists. Ericka Morrison and Lacey
DeGraw chipped in 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Ursinus recorded 28 of its 37 first-half points
in the paint to jump out to an 11-point lead at intermission that
would stand until the end.
After a scoreless two minutes, 21 seconds to start
the game, Alyson Kristofik helped Misericordia get on the board
first with a three-pointer.
Two free throws from Hughes made it 7-4, but Daley
and Molly Guntli exchanged layups to help the Bears take the lead
for good at the 13:33 mark.
Daley scored the next three baskets for Ursinus,
but the Cougars kept it a one-point game until Hennessey hit a jumper
with 8:13 left to play to start a 13-6 spurt to give the Bears a
double-digit lead at 29-19.
Less than two minutes to play in the first half,
Hennessey buried two layups off steals by Daley and Julie Bown to
extend the lead to 37-22.
Constanzer opened the second half scoring for the
Bears with three consecutive layups to make it 43-29. Misericordia
started to chip away its deficit, using a 12-3 run to get within
46-41 with 12:27 remaining thanks to five points from DeGraw and
Morrison apiece.
Forced to take a timeout, Ursinus managed to regain
its double-digit lead after Kate McMahon completed a three-point
play at 56-46.
Down the stretch, the Bears made 7-of-10 from the
charity stripe including two from Bown and three from Stephanie
Cavalier for the final 72-60 margin.
Guntli finished with a team-high 10 rebounds, while
adding eight points.
