ARLINGTON, VA. --- Jackie Dougherty (Roslyn, Pa./Abington) was one rebound shy of a double double to help lead Gwynedd-Mercy to a 66-61 win over Trinity (Tx.) in the first day of the 2005 Marymount Tip-Off Classic.

The junior netted 12 of her game-high 18 points in the second half and added four assists, a steal, and a blocked shot. Junior Ashley Vandiver (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) chipped in 14 points and six boards and senior Jillian Chiarantona (Abington, Pa./Gwynedd-Mercy Academy) scored 12 points for Gwynedd (1-0).

A 10-0 run by the Griffins midway through the first half dug GMC out of a seven-point deficit. The Tigers, who won the NCAA Division III National Championship in 2002-03, scored the last five points of the half as Gwynedd led 28-27 at the break.

A three-pointer from freshman Kristy Cramp (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley) and short jumper from Dougherty capped another 10-0 run to give the Griffins their biggest lead of the game, 52-40, with just under nine minutes in the game.

Trinity gave it one last push, outscoring Gwynedd 13-2 over the next eight minutes, tying the game at 59-59 with 1:37 left on a bucket from Jenny Farrar. She was one of two Tigers in double figures, finishing with 15 points. Martha King added 17 points to lead Trinity (0-1).

Key free throws down the stretch from sophomore Karen Tierney (Philadelphia, Pa./Kennedy-Kenrick) and a tough driving layup inside from Dougherty helped to seal the win.

Gwynedd shot 35% (20-of-57) for the game while Trinity hit 34% (24-of-70) of its shots.

The Griffins will now take on the host Marymount in the second round tomorrow at 5 p.m.
