GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd-Mercy had their five-game
win streak snapped as McDaniel prevailed in a 78-72 win in non-conference
action Saturday afternoon.
The Green Terror's Kristy Costa hit the go-ahead
bucket off a steal with 34 seconds remaining right after the Griffins
tied the game at 72-72 on a three-pointer from senior Jillian
Chiarantona (Abington, Pa./Gwynedd-Mercy). Costa, who finished
with 13 points and notched her 1,000th career point earlier in the
game, was one of five McDaniel players to finish in double figures.
Chiarantona led Gwynedd (6-2) with 16 points while
sophomores Karen Tierney (Philadelphia, Pa./Kennedy-Kenrick)
added 14 and Beccie Strohecker (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham)
11, respectively.
The Griffins found themselves in a hole in the first
half, down 16-4 at the midway point, but slowly climbed back. A
12-4 stretch to close the stanza enabled GMC to come within 26-24
at the break.
Gwynedd stayed within striking distance in the second
half as the teams battled. After McDaniel went up 66-58 with 5:01
to play, the Griffins pushed back to tie it at 69-69 on a layup
from Chiarantona with just under three minutes to go.
After Costa's go-ahead bucket, the Green Terror
iced the contest hitting all four of its attempts from the free-throw
line.
Theresa Hess and Heather Thompson each netted 15
points each to lead McDaniel. Hess added a game-high 12 boards as
MC held a 42-30 rebound edge.
Gwynedd-Mercy will return to action in the New Year
on January 3rd at 6 p.m. as they take on Washington College in the
first game of the Days Inn Classic hosted by Gettysburg College.
