GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- A 21-4 run midway in the
second half sparked Gwynedd-Mercy to rally and defeat King's, 73-63,
in non-league action Wednesday evening at the Griffin Complex. The
Griffins have now won five in a row.
Junior Jackie Dougherty (Roslyn, Pa./Abington)
scored a game-high 19 points and senior Jillian Chiarantona
(Abington, Pa./Gwynedd-Mercy) netted all of her 15 points in the
second half.
Beth Jordan and Kaitlyn Fiorino led the Lady Monarchs
(3-4) each scoring 16 points respectively. Jordan also grabbed a
game-high eight rebounds.
Gwynedd (6-1) opened up a three-point lead early
in the first half as back-to-back three-pointers from freshman Kristy
Cramp (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley) and sophomore Karen
Tierney (Philadelphia, Pa./Kennedy-Kenrick) gave GMC a 21-12
lead with just over 10 minutes before the half.
King's answered, and ran off a 17-6 run to close
the stanza to lead 34-30 at the break.
The second half saw the Griffins chip away early
at the deficit before a trey from Chiarantona and two tough jumpers
in the lane from junior Rebecca Frederick (North Cape May,
N.J./Lower Cape May), with the later giving Gwynedd a 55-54 lead
with 6:43 remaining, helped ignite the scoring stretch.
Frederick finished with 12 points as Gwynedd hit
51.9% (28-of-54) from the floor including eight three-pointers.
King's hit on 44.3% (27-of-61) shooting but were successful on just
three of 15 attempts from beyond the arc.
The Griffins play once more before the holiday break
as they host McDaniel in a non-conference tilt on Saturday, December
17th at 2 p.m.
