Griffins to host PAC Championship Saturday at 7 p.m.

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. - Junior Ashley Vandiver (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) and senior Jillian Chiarantona (Abington, Pa./Gwynedd-Mercy Academy) each scored 12 points to lead a balanced attack as top-seeded Gwynedd-Mercy rolled to a 67-37 win over fourth-seeded Alvernia in a semifinal game of the 2006 Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Tournament Thursday evening at the Griffin Complex.

The Griffins advance to the PAC Championship game for the ninth-straight season on Saturday here at 7 p.m. against second-seeded Wesley, who knocked off Neumann, 92-66, in the other semifinal.

Vandiver added 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season while Chiarantona grabbed seven boards. Sophomore Karen Tierney (Philadelphia, Pa./Kennedy-Kenrick) chipped in 10 points and eight assists.

Both teams got off to sluggish starts as the teams stayed within arms reach of each other. After Alee Barnes gave Alvernia an 8-7 lead midway through the stanza, Gwynedd exploded on a 20-4 run to close the half and lead 27-12 at the break.

From there the Griffins' (23-3) lead increased to 24 as Kristy Cramp (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley) hit one of her two treys on the night. The freshman finished with 10 points.

Alvernia (14-13) did not have a double-digit scorer as Kerry Higgs totaled nine points. Mandy Reinhart added seven while Lauren Fortna pulled down seven rebounds. The Crusaders were just 14-of-53 (26%) shooting and committed 23 turnovers

GM shot 43% (25-of-58) for the game including a 14-of-27 stint in the second half. The Griffins won the battle of the boards, 44-32. Sophomore Beccie Strohecker (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) totaled seven boards, four points, three steals, and two assists.
