DOVER, DEL. -- Gwynedd-Mercy advanced to its eighth-straight
PAC Championship Game by scoring the last 10 points in overtime
to claim an 88-85 win over Wesley in a PAC Tournament semifinal
matchup Friday evening.
The Griffins will play at Alvernia tomorrow at 7
p.m. in the title game. It is a rematch of last year's game as GMC
looks to return the favor by winning on the opposing court.
Freshman Lauren Healy (Glenmoore, Pa./Owen
J. Roberts) scored a season-high 24 points, with nine coming in
the extra session. Senior Gina Morano (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth
Academy) added a career-high 21 points.
The Griffins (15-11) scored the game's first seven
points and would lead by as much as 20-7 midway through the first
half before Wesley closed the gap with a 13-4 run to close out the
stanza. GMC held a 30-27 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Wolverines (19-8) took their
first lead of the contest as Tricia Casarotto scored on a layup
with 13:15 to play. Casarotto finished with 10 points, 11 rebounds,
four assists, and four blocks.
Wesley's Brittany Lundy, who netted 28 points in
the meeting of the teams last week, gave Wesley a 69-61 lead with
4:02 remaining. Lundy scored 16 points.
But back came the Griffins, who erased the deficit
to take a 72-71 lead with 1:12 in regulation on a bucket by freshman
Karen Tierney (Philadelphia, Pa./Kennedy-Kenrick). Tierney
registered 16 points. She would hit one of two free throws with
44 seconds to tie the game at 73-73 where both teams remained deadlocked
after 40 minutes.
In the overtime session, Gwynedd-Mercy fell behind
early and faced an 85-78 hole before holding Wesley without a field
goal over the last 2:36 and outscoring the Wolverines 10-0 to close
the game.
T'Neisha Turner led all scorers with 33 points while
teammate Robin Smith tabbed 18 points and a game-high 22 boards.
Wesley shot 31-of-89 (34%) for the game.
The Griffins were successful on 28-of-69 (40%) shooting
while draining nine treys on the night.
