Alvernia 59, Gwynedd-Mercy 50
GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. - Gwynedd-Mercy had their four-game
winning streak snapped as Alvernia held the Griffins without a field
goal in the last three minutes for a 59-50 win in Pennsylvania Athletic
Conference action Wednesday night at the Griffin Complex.
Juniors Jillian Chiarantona (Abington, Pa./Gwynedd-Mercy
Academy) and Rebecca Frederick (North Cape May, N.J./Lower
Cape May) led GMC with 10 points apiece. The Griffins shot just
31.1% (19-of-61) for the game, a season low.
The Griffins (8-10, 7-2 PAC) held a five-point lead
in with 5:26 the first half only to see the Crusaders rally to take
a 25-24 edge at the half. The seesaw first period featured five
lead changes and five ties.
Erin McIntyre's jumper gave Alvernia (15-5, 10-2
PAC) a 43-34 lead with 12:25 in the game. McIntyre lead all scorers
with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting.
Gwynedd-Mercy closed the gap to just two, 50-48,
with 3:20 to play but it would be the last bucket of the night as
Alvernia used a 9-2 run to close the game.
Trish O'Gurek chipped in 12 points and Kacie Andrusko
notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards. The Crusaders
shot 22-of-52 (42.3%) for the game.
The Griffins return to action on Saturday, February
5th with a PAC contest at Cabrini starting at 1 p.m.
