Gwynedd-Mercy 80, Alvernia 76
READING, PA. -- Gwynedd-Mercy defeated Alvernia,
80-76, for their first win on the season Wednesday night in Pennsylvania
Athletic Conference action.
Freshman Lauren Healy (Glenmoore, Pa./Owen
J. Roberts) scored 18 points to lead Gwynedd-Mercy. She was one
of four Griffins to finish in double digits as GMC avenged a loss
to the Crusaders in last year's PAC Championship game.
Tashieka Kennedy led all scores with 26 points and
14 rebounds.
Forward Jackie Dougherty (Roslyn, Pa./Abington)
hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to end the first half giving Gwynedd-Mercy
(1-3, 1-0 PAC) a 37-29 lead at halftime. The sophomore finished
with 12 points and six rebounds.
Freshman Karen Tierney (Philadelphia, Pa./Kennedy-Kenrick)
then connected on her only trey of ths night with just under 13
minutes in the game to give Gwynedd-Mercy its biggest lead of the
night, 48-35.
Alvernia (4-2, 0-1 PAC) rallied to get within two,
the latest coming at 78-76 with just 10 seconds remaining before
Tierney iced the game by sinking two free-throws.
Sophomore Michelle Sgrillo (Philadelphia,
Pa./Cardinal Dougherty) netted 15 points and seven boards while
senior Candice Ober (Swarthmore, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) chipped
in 14 points and six rebounds.
The Griffins take on Marywood in a PAC tilt this
Saturday at the Griffin Complex starting at 2 p.m.
