Albright 73, Gwynedd-Mercy 71 OT
GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. - Albright scored 13 points
in the last 35 seconds of regulation to force overtime where the
Lions hung on to defeat Gwynedd-Mercy, 73-71, Saturday afternoon.
Down 64-53, four free throws followed by a big three-point
play by Marie Levins helped Albright get within 64-60 with 24 ticks
on the clock. After two missed Griffin free throws, Ashley Howard
sliced through with a layup to make it 64-62 with just three seconds
left. But on the inbound Levins stole the pass and was fouled where
she hit two free-throws with 0.8 seconds to force the extra session
as the teams were deadlocked at 66-66.
The Griffins (2-6) had a chance to tie the game
in overtime as a foul with no time on the clock gave Gina Morano
(Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) a trip to the free-throw
line where she missed the first of two to help the Lions to complete
the comeback.
Levins led all scorers with 23 points, with 17 coming
in the second half. Teammate Jacqueline Hardwick chipped in 13 points
and seven boards for the Lions (2-6), who snapped a six-game losing
streak.
Gwynedd-Mercy led 31-20 at the half and looked to
pull away for good as Jillian Chiarantona (Abington, Pa./Gwynedd-Mercy
Academy) hit her third three-pointer of the game to give the Griffins
a 48-32 lead with 11 minutes in regulation.
The junior finished with 11 points and six rebounds.
She was one of four Griffins in double figures.
Sophomores Jackie Dougherty (Roslyn, Pa./Abington)
and Rebecca Frederick (North Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May)
each score 13 points respectively. Dougherty added four assists
while Frederick grabbed seven rebounds and blocked a shot.
Gwynedd-Mercy returns to action on Tuesday, December
28th as they play Johns Hopkins in the first game of the Grand Canyon
Classic in Phoenix, AZ.
