GYWNEDD VALLEY, PA. - Third-seeded Immaculata defeated
second-seeded Gwynedd-Mercy, 65-59, Tuesday night in the semifinals
of the 2007 Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Tournament. With the
win, the Macs advance to Friday's championship game at top-seeded
Alvernia, who were winners over fourth-seeded Eastern.
Sophomore Haven Wroten (Philadelphia/Prep
Charter) led the Griffins (14-12) with a game-high 18 points and
added seven rebounds. Senior Chris DelBrocco (Philadelphia/St.
John Neumann) netted 14 points while sophomore David Smith
(Cape May Court House, N.J./Middle Twp.) chipped in 10 points and
seven caroms.
Scott Marston was one of two Macs with a double-double,
registering 15 points and 11 rebounds. Teammate Robert Jones scored
13 points and pulled down 10 boards for Immaculata (12-15).
Gwynedd fell in a hole early, as the Macs raced
out to a 17-9 lead. Sophomore Jack Forth (Upper Merion, Pa./Upper
Merion) helped GM get their feet back under as his three-pointer
tied it at 18-18 with just over nine minutes to play. The teams
traded buckets before two Lemeire Talley (Blackwood, N.J./Highland)
free throws just before the half put Gwynedd up 32-31 at the break.
A 9-2 Immaculata run to open the second half helped
build a six-point lead, but that would be as much of a lead either
team would get the rest of the night.
With the Griffins up 52-51 with 7:45 on the clock,
the Macs' Dan Lepone was fouled on a three-point attempt. He would
hit all three free-throws to give Immaculata the lead for good
Gwynedd got within two points twice in the last
four and half minutes but could not take the lead.
