BOSTON, MA. - Chris DelBrocco (Philadelphia,
Pa./St. John Neumann) went for a career-best 31 points to help Gwynedd-Mercy
to a season-opening 80-77 win over the host Emmanuel College in
the Emmanuel Tip-Off Tournament Saturday afternoon.
The senior added five assists, three rebounds, and
three steals and more importantly went nine-for-nine at the free-throw
line including a perfect four-for-four in the last 1:20 to help
seal the win.
Senior Corey Rich (Norristown, Pa./Kennedy-Kenrick)
netted 17 points in his Griffin debut while junior Kevin Lauer
(Philadelphia, Pa./St. John Neumann) and sophomore Jack Forth
(Upper Merion, Pa./Upper Merion) each added 10 points respectively.
The Griffins trailed by as much as 15 points midway
through the first half before cutting the hole to just 47-42 at
the break.
Trailing 76-75 with under two minutes to play, DelBrocco
hit two from the line to give GM a one-point edge. After the teams
didn't score in the next four possessions, he stepped to the stripe
and hit two more with six ticks left. A last three-point attempt
by the Saints was no good, giving the Griffins the victory.
Mack Spellman was one of four Emmanuel players in
double figures, scoring a team-high 23 while also grabbing nine
boards.
Gwynedd will play tomorrow in the championship game
at 5 p.m. between the winner of the Staten Island/New Jersey City
matchup.
