GYWNEDD VALLEY, PA. - Eastern ended Gwynedd-Mercy's
five-game win streak with a 65-59 Pennsylvania Athletic Conference
win Monday evening at the Griffin Complex.
David Volpe led all scorers with 20 points to lead
Eastern. Sophomore David Smith (Lower Cape May, N.J./Middle
Twp.) led the Griffins with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Gwynedd (9-7, 7-2 PAC) led 29-20 late in the first
half before the Eagles (9-7, 6-5 PAC) closed the period on a 12-3
run to pull within 33-32 at the break.
Later in the second stanza, the Griffins hit a scoring
snag, as Smith's bucket inside with 11:03 in the game was the last
field goal over the next 10 minutes for GM. The Eagles built an
eight-point lead on eight consecutive free throws over the Gwynedd
scoring drought. Matt Malloy's two trips to the line were good with
3:31 left and gave Eastern a 59-51 lead.
The Griffins rallied, but could only get within
five twice with just over a minute remaining.
Smith collected his third double-double on the season.
Haven Wroten (Philadelphia, Pa./Prep Charter) also netted
14 points while Chris DelBrocco (Philadelphia, Pa./St. John
Neumann) added 13 and sophomore Jack Forth (Upper Merion,
Pa./Upper Merion) chipped in 10.
Lenny DiMaria netted 14 points for Eastern as both
he and Volpe hit five of the team's six treys on the night.
The Griffins shot under 50% for the first time in
five games, hitting just 37.7% (23-of-61) from the floor. The Eagles
connected on 45.8% (22-of-48) for the evening.
Gwynedd hosts Marywood this Thursday at 8 p.m. as
the Griffins try to avenge an 80-77 loss to the Pacers back on December
4th.
