Box
Score
GYWNEDD VALLEY, PA. - Chris DelBrocco (Philadelphia/St.
John Neumann) hit a three-pointer with 0.6 seconds remaining to
lift Gwynedd-Mercy to a 74-73 Pennsylvania Athletic Conference win
over Cabrini in the regular season finale. With the win, the Griffins
(14-11, 12-6 PAC) secure the No.2 seed and a first-round bye for
the league playoffs which start on Saturday.
The senior finished with 31 points, which ties his
career-high, on 11-of-19 shooting including eight three-pointers,
six of which came in the second half alone. Sophomore Haven Wroten
(Philadelphia/Prep Charter) added 19 points and pulled down 13 caroms.
GM used 21-4 run in the first stanza to help build
a 38-23 halftime lead but the Cavs (5-20, 4-14 PAC) chipped at the
lead in the second, getting within one point twice with under eight
minutes to play. Cabrini took their first lead since early in the
game on a Bruce McClelland jumper from the right baseline for a
58-57 advantage with 6:03 left.
DelBrocco helped erase the deficit with 1:34 left
as he hit a trey and was fouled on the release. His free-throw completed
the four-point play, as GM took a 71-68 lead.
After a layup and two Reid free-throws, Cabrini
went back on top 72-71 with under a minute to play. On the next
Griffin possession, he grabbed a miss and got fouled, sending him
to the line again with five ticks left. Reid hit the first but the
second rimmed out. With no timeouts, David Smith (Cape May
Court House, N.J./Middle Twp.) grabbed the rebound and fired a pass
to DelBrocco just past midcourt. From there DelBrocco launched a
last-second shot with two defenders in his face and found nothing
but net.
Smith collected 10 boards as well as senior Rashid
Santiago (Allentown, Pa./George School). The team outrebounded
the Cavs, 56-35, on the night.
The Griffins will host a PAC Tournament Semifinal
round game here at the Griffin Complex this Tuesday at 7 p.m.
