BOYERTOWN, PA - Tournament MVP Josh Thomas (Severn,
Md./Cardinal Gibbons) pitched seven innings in relief to help Gwynedd-Mercy
capture its third Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Title with a
9-4 win over Wesley in the second game of the championship series.
Earlier in the day the Griffins, who came all the
way back from the loser's bracket after dropping their first game
on Friday, rode the momentum of yesterday's two wins including a
13-inning marathon to knock out defending champion Alvernia, forced
the deciding game with a convincing 10-1 win.
The victory also assures the Griffins (30-10) a
spot in the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament which begins May
16th.
Thomas came on in relief on just two day's rest.
The senior struck out five on six hits and two unearned runs and
didn't allow a walk.
Senior Matt Martin (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius
X) helped spark the offense going 2-for-3 with four RBIs. Sophomore
Tim Hoban (Philadelphia/Roman Catholic) added three hits
as Gwynedd clamped down on the title after four-straight runner-up
appearances in the championship series.
After Martin's sac fly in the first, the Wolverines
answered back with two runs in the second courtesy of a solo home
run form Cory Huemmer and a RBI double from Shane Mitchell.
Martin struck again in the third with a two-out
base hit to score junior Mark Mattes (Doylestown, Pa./C.B.
East). Later in the fifth Martin drove in two runs with a double
to deep left center as part of a three-run frame giving GM a 5-2
lead.
Thomas who started the third inning came in for
freshman Tom Weiss (Southampton, Pa./William Tennent), relieving
Griffin starter Kevin Dronson (Haddonfield, N.J./Gloucester
Catholic). Thomas allowed just unearned runs and got out of a jam
in the seventh after Wesley cut it to 6-4. With runners on second
and third, Thomas fanned Scott Marshall to end the threat.
In the seventh, the Griffins took advantage of two
key errors to help increase their lead, scoring three times.
From there Thomas pitched into the ninth, and got
Kevin Ellis to ground out into a double play to end the game and
the celebration was on.
