GLASSBORO, N.J. -Gwynedd-Mercy had the bases loaded
in the top of the ninth but was unable to get a run home as the
Griffins fell, 5-3, to Rowan in a non-league game on Tuesday.
After an RBI groundout in the second off the bat
of freshman Scott Carroll (Churchville, Pa./Council Rock
South), Gwynedd saw the Profs plate two runs off of an error in
the bottom of the frame for a 2-1 deficit.
Mark Mattes' (Doylestown, Pa./C.B. West)
RBI double in the third tied the game at 2-2. Rowan would answer
with Tim Edmeads' solo shot in the sixth to give the Profs a 3-2
lead.
Rowan added two runs in the eighth off a sacrifice
fly and an error to go up 5-2.
The Griffins did cross a run in the ninth off a
bases loaded walk from senior Anthony Capella (Philadelphia/Roman
Catholic) and threatened for more. But with the socks full and with
two outs the Profs held on as a strikeout ended the game.
Starter Sean Middleton (Perkasie, Pa./Lansdale
Catholic) went six innings as the sophomore gave up three runs (one
earned) on five hits while Tim McMenamin (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple
Shade) had two of the Griffins' four hits on the day.
Gwynedd hosts Catholic University this Thursday
in another non-conference tilt here starting at 3 p.m.
