GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA - Gwynedd-Mercy swept a Pennsylvania
Athletic Conference doubleheader from visiting Misericordia on Senior
Day Saturday afternoon.
With the wins, the Griffins (24-9, 14-6 PAC) officially
clinch a spot in next weekend's PAC Tournament at Bear Stadium in
Boyertown.
Senior Matt Martin (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius
X) went 3-for-3, knocked in two, and scored twice in an 11-8 win
in game one. Sophomore Tim McMenamin (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple
Shade) added two hits and three RBIs while senior Anthony Capella
(Philadelphia/Roman Catholic) went 2-for-3 with a two-run triple.
Trailing 3-2 going into the bottom of the third,
the Griffins exploded for five runs highlighted by Capella's two-run
triple and McMenamin's two-run single.
After the Cougars (5-28, 4-15) clawed to 7-5 in
the fifth, RBIs from McMenamin, senior J.B. Meadows (Pennsville,
N.J./Pennsville) and sophomore Tim Hoban (Philadelphia/Roman
Catholic) restored a five-run lead.
Freshman Dan Strack's (Langhorne, Pa./Holy
Ghost) RBI single in the sixth pushed the lead to 11-5.
Game two saw senior Matt Daley (Philadelphia/Roman
Catholic) take a no-hitter into the seventh as Gwynedd won, 7-2.
Tim McMenamin had the hot bat, going 3-for-3 with
a three-run home run. Junior Mark Mattes (Doylestown, Pa./C.B.
East) added a solo shot and Martin added two RBIs in the win.
The Cougars got a run in the fifth after leadoff
walks and a sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third. A ground
out allowed the runner from third to cross. Jamie Philippi broke
up the no-hit bid with a leadoff single in the seventh.
Daley allowed just two runs on three hits and tied
a career-high with seven strikeouts.
The teams will meet tomorrow in a nine-inning contest
in Dallas, Pa. starting at 1 p.m.
