PHILADELPHIA - Anthony Capella (Philadelphia/Roman
Catholic) went 4-for-7 with a pair of home runs to help Gwynedd-Mercy
spilt a Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Doubleheader Tuesday with
Marywood. The games were played at Enry Field in the Mount Airy
section of Philadelphia.
In game one, the Pacers used a four-run fourth to
break a 3-3 tie and added five more in the sixth, but the Griffins
answered with home runs from Capella and sophomore Nick DiEnno
(Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) in the bottom of the inning to
try to rally the troops.
Marywood added some insurance runs in the top of
the seventh with a bases-loaded double and RBI single to plate four
more runs. Gwynedd answered with four in the bottom of the frame
highlighted by Mark Mattes' (Doylestown, Pa./C.B. East) two-run
homer to left.
Game two saw Gwynedd cross a run in the second,
third, and fourth innings to build a 3-0 lead. But Marywood took
a 4-3 lead in the 6th as a grand slam put the Pacers up by one.
Capella's lead-off double in the sixth sparked a
rally, as GM scored five times off of five hits in the inning to
reclaim the lead for good.
Junior Kyle Reynolds (Darby, Pa./Cardinal
O'Hara) who entered the game in the sixth, pitched a perfect seventh
to lock up the win.
Capella and sophomore Tim McMenamin (Maple
Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) each had two hits with an RBI in game two.
Gwynedd plays at The College of New Jersey tomorrow
at 3:30 p.m.
