Griffins can't hold lead, see Cougars rally in late innings

BOYERTOWN, PA. - In a game that saw seven lead changes,
Kean scored six times in the eighth inning to go on and rally past
Gwynedd-Mercy, 13-9, in a wild NCAA Tournament Regional contest
late Thursday night.
Gwynedd now plays the College of New Jersey Friday
at 4:30 p.m.
Freshman Dan Strack (Langhorne, Pa./Holy
Ghost) was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and sophomore Tim McMenamin
(Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) added two hits with a two-run homerun.
The Cougars' Aaron Richard was 4-for-6 with six
RBIs with a double and a homerun.
Trailing 7-6 going into the seventh, the trio of
Strack, McMenamin and Anthony Capella (Philadelphia/Roman
Catholic) helped put three more runs on the board. With two on and
two out, a base hit from Capella to left was bobbled by the fielder
Dan Mattonelli allowing McMenamin to score for a 7-7 tie. Strack
followed up with a two-run single to center, plating two more runs
for a 9-7 edge.
Richard struck again in the eighth with a two-run
double to knot the game at 9-9. After the first two batters reached
and then sacrificed up a base, Richard sent one deep in the gap
in left. Later a HBP with the bases full made it 10-9 Kean lead.
Three more times the Cougars scored to take a four-run edge.
Kean will now plays Johns Hopkins in a matchup of
two 2-0 teams tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
J.B. Meadows (Pennsville, N.J./Pennsville)
smacked an RBI double to left, followed by an RBI single from Tim
Hoban (Philadelphia/Roman Catholic) to make it a 3-1 lead after
two innings.
Each team scored three times in the third. Richard's
two-run homer to right and a sac fly pushed the Cougars ahead, 4-3.
But McMenamin answered, going deep on a 3-2 pitch over the left
field wall for a two-run shot followed by an RBI single from Strack
to help reclaim a 5-4 lead.
In the 6th, Richard beat out groundball from a diving
Ken Bengtson (Jamison, Pa./C.B. East) at second allowing
Derek Gianakas to score all the way from second to take a 7-6 lead.
GMC starter Josh Thomas (Severn, Md./Archbishop
Spaulding) went six innings, but allowed seven runs (four unearned)
on seven hits with six walks and one strikeout.
Brandon Aich relieved starter Andrew Cupido and
struck out six in seven-plus innings.
NOTES: Gwynedd is one win shy from tying
the single-season mark for victories
Capella and Hoban also
added two hits respectively.
