Mattes nearly hits for cycle

HAVERFORD, PA - Junior Mark Mattes (Doylestown,
Pa./C.B. East) was a triple shy of the cycle going 3-for-5 with
four runs scored and three RBIs to pace Gwynedd-Mercy to an 11-2
non-league win at Haverford Wednesday afternoon.
Mattes doubled in the fifth, singled in the seventh,
and hit a three-run home run in the eighth. Teammate Matt Martin
(Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X) also knocked in three RBIs, going
2-for-4 on the day including a two-run double in the first.
Starter Sean Middleton (Perkasie, Pa./Lansdale
Catholic) kept the Fords at bay, giving up just two runs on five
hits in seven innings of work. The sophomore fanned three and walked
just one.
Tim Hoban's (Philadelphia/Roman Catholic)
RBI double in the fifth capped a three-run frame to put Gwynedd
(12-8) up 6-0.
Senior Chris Corkery (Philadelphia/Roman
Catholic) and sophomore Ken Bengtson (Jamison, Pa./C.B. East)
each added two hits and two runs scored for the Griffins.
Gwynedd-Mercy opens a three-game weekend series
with Neumann on Friday in Aston, Pa. in a nine-inning tilt starting
at 3 p.m.
