Score
BOYERTOWN, PA. - Sophomore Tim McMenamin (Maple
Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) hit a two-out, two-run homerun to right
in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift Gwynedd-Mercy to a 5-3
win over Frostburg State in the first game of the 2007 NCAA Tournament
Regional at Bear Stadium.
The Griffins will now play tomorrow at 8 p.m. against
either top-seeded Kean or in a rematch with the Bobcats.
Gwynedd led 3-2 going into the ninth, but Frostburg
rallied as a two-out single from Bryan Burke knotted the game.
In the bottom of the ninth, leadoff hitter Ken
Bengtson (Jamison, Pa./C.B. East) singled to left, and later
after two popups, stole second. The throw careened into center field,
but the sophomore got a late jump taking off for third and was thrown
out, sending the game to extra innings.
The Griffins (32-10) did build a 2-0 lead in the
second as a pair of two-out RBI singles from Chris Corkery (Philadelphia/Roman
Catholic) and Dan Strack (Langhorne, Pa./Holy Ghost) helped
starter Matt Daley (Philadelphia/Roman Catholic).
Daley worked five innings, scattering six hits and
gave up only one run, a solo homer by FSU's Ryan Webb in the fourth
to cut the lead to 2-1.
GM plated a run in the fifth on a throwing error
for a 3-1 edge. With Bengtson on second and Matt Martin on first,
a hard hit ball to short was snared by Brett Mitchell who tried
to flip to second. Martin beat the force out and the throw to first
got away from 1B Allen Peake, allowing Bengtson to round third and
score.
Peake atoned for the error in the sixth as he hit
a solo homerun just inside the left field foul pole off of reliever
Kyle Reynolds (Darby, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara).
In the bottom of the frame, Gwynedd had back-to-back
singles and later loaded the bases with two outs, but a diving snare
off a sharp hit ball to center ended the threat.
Reynolds picked up the win, striking out two over
five hits and two runs in five innings.
McMenamin and Bengtson had three hits each. Mike
Gitzen also added three hits for Frostburg (31-14).
NOTES: Frostburg eliminated the Griffins
from last year's NCAA Regional on a walk-off RBI single
Senior
Anthony Capella (Philadelphia/Roman Catholic) doubled in
the second, notching his ninth on the season and school-record leading
46th of his career.
