Griffins get first PAC win of 2007

ST. DAVIDS, PA. - In their first action in more than two weeks due to inclement weather, Gwynedd-Mercy plated four runs in the top of the eighth to break a 5-5 tie and go on to defeat Eastern, 9-5, for their first Pennsylvania Athletic Conference win on Monday.

The Griffins (7-1, 1-0 PAC) had just one hit in the 8th, but took advantage of three Eagle errors to go ahead for good.

Senior Anthony Capella (Philadelphia/Roman Catholic) went 2-for-5 with a big two-run single in the 6th as part of a five-run frame. He then threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning to help nail down the win.

Eastern (1-9, 0-1 PAC) crossed three runs in the first off of GM starter Josh Thomas (Severn, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) but the senior settled down to strike out three with no walks as he went into the seventh. Junior Kyle Reynolds (Darby, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) relieved Thomas and allowed just one hit with two K's, to pick up the victory.

Gwynedd will host Marywood in a PAC twinbill here starting at 1 p.m.
