BOYERTOWN, PA. - Gwynedd-Mercy remained alive in
the 2007 PAC Baseball Tournament with a 6-4 win over Arcadia to
eliminate the Knights Saturday afternoon.
Anthony Capella (Philadelphia/Roman Catholic)
recorded his 200th career hit as the senior went 3-for-5 with three
RBIs and a run scored. Capella reached the milestone in the second
inning with a leadoff drag bunt down to third.
Teammate Matt Daley (Philadelphia/Roman Catholic)
was just as impressive as the starter threw into the ninth, scattering
four runs on six hits. Daley also survived six walks and at one
point he retired 10-straight batters.
Capella helped the Griffins take a 2-0 lead as his
bases-loaded double in the third plated Albert DiDomenico (Philadelphia/Neumann-Goretti)
and Mark Mattes (Doylestown Pa./C.B. East). Tim McMenamin
(Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) followed with an RBI groundout
as GM led by three runs.
In the sixth, Arcadia put runners on the corners
with two outs but a leaping grab off a groundball bounce by first
baseman Matt Martin (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius X) allowed GM
to leave the inning unscathed.
The Griffins (27-10) looked to break the game open
with three runs in the eighth. Mattes led off the frame with a homerun
to left and Martin followed with a double to left. Capella knocked
in pinch-runner Sean Carchidi with an RBI single. After John Squire
relieved Arcadia starter Steve Chobert, McMenamin welcomed him to
the game with a double to right allowing Capella to score, making
it a 6-1 GM edge.
In the top of the ninth, Gwynedd had two on with
no outs and tried two suicide bunts but were unable to add to their
lead.
The Knights made things interesting in their last
at-bat as a one-out two-run double from Eric Console cut the lead
to 6-3. After a pinch hit single from Andy Bella to put runners
at the corners, reliever Kyle Reynolds (Darby, Pa./Cardinal
O'Hara) came on to strikeout Dave Morris but allowed an RBI single
from John Curreri for a 6-4 lead. With two on, Reynolds settled
down and got potential-winning run John Connell swinging for his
fourth save on the year.
Console was 2-for-4 with three RBIs for Arcadia
(24-11).
Gwynedd will now play the loser of the Wesley/Alvernia
game tonight at 7 p.m. in another elimination game.
