GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA - An RBI double in the top of
the ninth broke a tie game to allow Arcadia to go on and defeat
Gwynedd-Mercy, 6-5, in a Pennsylvania Athletic Conference game Tuesday
afternoon.
The Griffins held a 5-1 lead but saw the Knights
plate four runs in the eighth.
Senior Matt Martin (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius
X) as 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for GM. Starter Tim McMenamin
(Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) threw into the eighth, scattering
five runs on 10 hits, while fanning four and walking just two.
Gwynedd (11-8, 5-5 PAC) crossed a run in the first
and the second innings. After Arcadia (12-7, 8-4 PAC) would add
one in the third, senior Chris Corkery (Philadelphia/Roman
Catholic) hit and RBI double and would later score on an error in
the fourth to give GMC a 4-1 lead.
Martin's RBI single in the seventh upped the lead
to 5-1 before McMenamin ran into trouble in the eighth. After he
gave up a bases loaded single, reliever Kyle Reynolds (Darby,
Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) entered with one out. From there, the Knights
managed two-straight RBI singles and a hit by pitch to score three
runs to deadlock the game at 5-5. The Griffins got out of the frame
with an inning-ending double play.
In the ninth Arcadia's Nick Goetz hit a one-out
RBI double to take a 6-5 lead.
The Griffins led off the ninth with a walk but three-straight
outs by the Knights closed the game.
Gwynedd will play at Haverford tomorrow in a non-league
tilt starting at 3:30 p.m.
