Score
BOYERTOWN, PA. - Third-seeded Gwynedd-Mercy lost
3-2 to second-seeded Alvernia in the first game of the 2007 Pennsylvania
Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament Friday afternoon.
The Griffins now will play tomorrow at 11 a.m. against
the loser of fourth-seeded Wesley and top-seeded Arcadia in an elimination
game. Alvernia will play the winner at 3 p.m.
The Crusaders' Jason Ziegler threw a complete game,
striking out seven and walking two on eight hits. GMC's Josh
Thomas (Severn, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) was just as impressive,
as the senior went eight innings allowing three runs (two earned)
with no walks and three strikeouts.
Alvernia took a 1-0 lead in the first as Tim Carroll
scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Zach Lutz. The Crusaders
etched another run in the fourth after catcher J.B. Meadows'
(Pennsville, N.J./Pennsville) throw to third on a double steal went
into left field, allowing Chris Raniere to cross home plate.
But the Griffins got one back in the fifth as senior
Anthony Capella (Philadelphia/Roman Catholic) delivered a
two-out RBI single to right to plate sophomore Tim Hoban (Philadelphia/Roman
Catholic).
Dale Curry's two-out RBI double in the sixth restored
a two-run lead for Alvernia.
In the ninth, Gwynedd threatened, as Chris Corkery
(Philadelphia/Roman Catholic) and Albert DiDomenico (Philadelphia/Neumann-Goretti)
hit back-to-back singles with two-outs. Pinch hitter Dan Strack
(Langhorne, Pa./Holy Ghost) then singled down the left field
line scoring Corkery, but Ziegler got Ken Bengtson (Jamison,
Pa./C.B. East) to groundout to second to retire the side.
