Errors costly in league loss

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA - Six unearned runs off of six
Griffin errors were the difference in a 7-5 Pennsylvania Athletic
Conference loss to defending champ Alvernia Friday afternoon.
Senior Matt Martin (Pottstown, Pa./St. Pius
X) and sophomore Tim Hoban (Philadelphia/Roman Catholic)
each went 1-for-4 with a run scored. Martin added two RBI's while
Hoban legged out a triple.
GM starter Tim McMenamin (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple
Shade) went seven innings, fanning two while scattering six hits
and allowing just one earned run. His counterpart, Alvernia's Jason
Ziegler lasted eight innings giving up five runs (three earned)
on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
After the Griffins (8-4, 2-2 PAC) cut it to 3-2
after three innings, errors in each of the fourth, fifth, sixth
allowed Alvernia (10-6, 3-2 PAC) to take a 7-3 lead.
Martin's two-run single in the eighth made sliced
the deficit to just 7-5. In the ninth, Gwynedd got a man on and
the tying run to the plate but were unable to get the equalizer.
Steve Burdan collected three hits with two runs
scored and one driven in for the Crusaders.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow in Reading
for a doubleheader starting at noon.
