BOYERTOWN, PA - Senior Chris Corkery's (Philadelphia/Roman
Catholic) sac fly in the top the 13th was the difference as Gwynedd-Mercy
outlasted Alvernia to oust the defending champs out of the 2007
Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Tournament, in a 5-4 Griffin win
late Saturday night.
The Griffins (28-10) advance to tomorrow's championship
series with Wesley starting at 1 p.m.
After the teams were tied 3-3 after nine, each team
scored a run in the 12th. Freshman Albert DiDomenico (Philadelphia/Neumann
Goretti) singled home sophomore Tim Hoban (Philadelphia/Roman
Catholic). The Crusaders (27-13) answered in the bottom of the frame
with a solo home run from Dale Curry to knot the game at 4-4.
After Chris Raniere's fielding error on leadoff
hitter Anthony Capella (Philadelphia/Roman Catholic), his
throw sailed wide and allowed the senior to move to second. Capella
would then move to third on a passed ball that was first ruled a
foul tip but after the umpires consulted the correct call was made.
The next batter Corkery sent a soaring shot to right where Capella
beat the throw home.
In the 13th, Alvernia was able to get runners on
with two outs, but reliever, Kyle Reynolds (Darby, Pa./Cardinal
O'Hara), who threw a career-long seven innings, got Steve Burdan
to groundout to end the game.
Gwynedd just had six hits but took advantage of
seven Crusaders errors. Junior Mark Mattes (Doylestown, Pa./C.B.
East) and sophomore Ken Bengtson (Jamison, Pa./C.B. East)
each had two hits. Mattes added an RBI double way back in the first.
Zach Lutz had three hits and was walked intentionally
twice. Tim Carroll added a two-run single in the fifth.
