GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. - Sophomore Chris Corkery
(Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) hit a game-winning two-run double
in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two to cap a four-run
rally helping Gwynedd-Mercy sweep a Pennsylvania Athletic Conference
Doubleheader from Wesley Wednesday afternoon.
The Griffins (20-9, 11-1 PAC), who have won six
in a row, won the nightcap, 7-6, and took the first game, 7-3, behind
the strong pitching of Matt Daley (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman
Catholic).
The junior struck out seven, walked two and scattered
two earned runs on seven hits for his fourth complete game on the
season. Senior Troy Peiffer (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford)
and sophomore Mark Mattes (Doylestown, Pa./C.B. East) provided
the offense, each with two hits and two RBIs.
In game two, Wesley (17-11, 7-5 PAC) staked a 5-1
lead after plating two runs in the third and three in the fourth.
But the Griffins got two runs back in the bottom of the frame as
Mattes delivered a two-out, two-run single to cut the deficit to
5-3.
Down 6-3 heading into the seventh, freshman Tim
Hoban (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) led off the inning
with a double and would score on a two-base hit from the next batter,
Mattes. After back-to-back walks to Capella and Peiffer to load
the bases, Mattes would score on a wild pitch to make it 6-5. Corkery
then stepped to the plate and hit one into the gap in left center
to provide the winning runs and complete the comeback.
Hoban had two hits and two runs scored while junior
Anthony Capella (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) added
an RBI triple in the first. Sophomore Kyle Reynolds (Darby,
Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) picked up the win after pitching a scoreless
seventh.
