GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. - Matt Daley (Philadelphia,
Pa./Roman Catholic) scattered five hits over seven-plus scoreless
innings as Gwynedd-Mercy posted a 5-1 Pennsylvania Athletic Conference
win over Neumann Friday afternoon.
The junior lasted into the eighth, striking out
six and walking six to earn his third win on the year.
Junior Anthony Capella (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman
Catholic) gave Gwynedd (15-9, 6-1 PAC) a 1-0 in the first as he
scored on an RBI double off the bat of senior Troy Peiffer
(Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford).
Two more runs crossed in the fifth as an RBI groundout
from Capella along with sophomore Mark Mattes (Doylestown,
Pa./C.B. East) scoring on a stolen base and throwing error at third
helped to build a 3-0 lead.
The Knights (5-9, 1-6 PAC) threatened in the sixth,
but Daley got out of a bases loaded jam with a strikeout to end
the inning.
After sophomore Kyle Reynolds (Darby, Pa./Cardinal
O'Hara) came on in relief, getting out of a sticky situation in
the eighth with runners on and no outs, junior Matt Martin (Pottstown,
Pa./St. Pius X) gave GM some insurance runs in the bottom of the
frame with a two-run double. Reynolds pitched the ninth as well
to earn his second save on the season.
Chris Dascher had three hits and a run scored for
Neumann, who scored their lone run in the ninth on a groundout from
Matt Backert.
The two teams hook up tomorrow for a PAC Doubleheader
in Aston, Pa. tomorrow starting at noon.
