GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. - Gwynedd-Mercy swept a non-league
doubleheader Saturday afternoon over visiting Haverford, winning
game one 3-2 and the second, 10-1.
Junior Matt Daley (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman
Catholic) went the distance in game one, striking out seven on just
six hits and two runs (one earned) and one walk, to earn his first
win on the season.
The Griffins built a 3-0 lead after two innings
before a run in the fourth and a run in the seventh by the Ford
cut the lead to just one. Sophomore Mark Mattes (Doylestown,
Pa./C.B. East) had two hits while freshman Ken Bengtson (Jamison,
Pa./C.B. East) had an RBI and a run scored.
Game two saw GM jump out early again, thanks to
a six-run second inning, with the big blow coming from Mattes' two-run
double. He went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Junior Anthony
Capella (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) added two RBI's while
Bengtson and sophomore Kurt Bruehl (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell
Egan) both scored twice.
Starter Josh Thomas (Severn Md./Cardinal
Gibbons) allowed just one run on four hits over six innings, fanning
four and walking three for his second win on the year.
Gwynedd-Mercy evens their record to 5-5 on the season
while Haverford drops to 7-6. The Griffins will host Penn State-Berks
in another non-league doubleheader tomorrow starting at noon.
