BOYERTOWN, PA. -- Fifth-seeded Franklin & Marshall
defeated fourth-seeded Gwynedd-Mercy, 14-1, Thursday morning in
the first game of the NCAA Division III Baseball Regional Tournament
at Bear Stadium.
The Griffins (31-14) now will play tomorrow at 8
p.m. in the loser's bracket against the loser of Kean/Frostburg
State.
The Diplomat's Gary Krueger went 3-for-6 with two
doubles and two RBI's while Jon Compitello added two hits and four
RBI's including a three-run double.
F&M (29-9) took a 2-0 lead in the second off
of two unearned runs. Stephen Frederick reached on a dropped fly
ball and would score on a double from Rich Galugi. Galugi would
later score on an RBI single from Compitello.
The Griffins got on the board in the fourth as senior
Ryan McMahon (Upper Darby, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) drove home
Troy Peiffer (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) on a two-out single.
Peiffer led off the inning with a bloop single to right and advanced
to third on two groundouts and would score on McMahon's base hit
up the middle.
But in the sixth, Krueger's two-run double helped
cap a four-run inning to increase the lead to 7-1.
McMahon and Peiffer each had one hit while freshman
Ken Bengtson (Jamison, Pa./C.B. East) added a double in the
ninth for the Griffins.
Freshman Sean Middleton (Perkasie, Pa./Lansdale
Catholic) took the loss for GM.
This was the first meeting of the two schools.
