Coach Paul Murphy notches 200th career victory

BOYERTOWN, PA. - Griffin Head Coach Paul Murphy and the Gwynedd-Mercy College Baseball program earned its 200th victory as Gwynedd-Mercy defeated Arcadia, 12-4, in the consolation bracket to stay alive in the 2006 Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Tournament.

The Griffins knock out the Knights and advance to tomorrow's title game against Alvernia in a rematch of last year's championship.

Josh Thomas (Severn, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) threw eight scoreless innings while striking out three and walking just two earning the win. The junior tied a single-season school record with his eighth win on the year.

Sophomore Chris Corkery (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) delivered a two-run single in the third as part of a four run frame.

Two more runs crossed in the sixth and seventh while the Griffins batted around in the eighth to plate four more runs for a commanding 12-0 lead.

Senior Troy Peiffer (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford), junior Anthony Capella (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic), sophomore Mark Mattes (Doylestown, Pa./C.B. East) and freshman Tim Hoban (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) all had three hits apiece with Peiffer collecting his 200th collegiate hit.

Brandon Mazzie was the lone bright spot for Arcadia, hitting a grand slam in the ninth.

Murphy, in his eighth season at the helm, now has a career mark of 200-133-1
