BOYERTOWN, PA. - Alvernia doubled up Gwynedd-Mercy,
14-7, in the first game of the 2006 Pennsylvania Athletic Conference
Tournament Friday afternoon at Bear Stadium in Boyertown.
The Griffins will play tomorrow at 11 a.m. against
the loser of the Arcadia-Wesley contest in an elimination game.
GM allowed a season-high 19 hits as the Crusaders
scored in all but one inning as they roughed up starter Matt
Daley (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic). Daley lasted into
the sixth after giving up 11 hits and seven runs (five earned),
both season-highs.
After Alvernia plated two in the top of the first,
Gwynedd answered as Anthony Capella (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman
Catholic) reached on a fielder's choice scoring Ken Bengtson
(Jamison, Pa./C.B. East) for his 105th career run batted in,
breaking the school record. Capella later
scored on an RBI double from Troy Peiffer (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford).
Peiffer had three hits and a run scored while sophomore
Mark Mattes (Doylestown, Pa./C.B. East) was 1-for-4 with
an RBI.

seven runs on 11 hits.

In the third, the Crusaders' Chris Raniere doubled
home starter Jason Ziegler to break a 3-3 tie and give AC the lead
for good.
Ziegler went 8.1 innings, yielding seven runs on
nine hits while striking out seven. Raniere would strike later as
he connected on a three-run home run to left in the ninth. He finished
with five RBI's.
