GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. - Junior pitchers Matt Daley
(Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) and Josh Thomas (Severn,
Md./Cardinal Gibbons) helped Gwynedd-Mercy sweep a Pennsylvania
Athletic Conference doubleheader from Alvernia Saturday afternoon.
Daley scattered two runs on seven hits while striking
out five and walking none for this third complete game in a 4-2
win in game one.
After an RBI double in the third gave Alvernia a
brief 1-0 lead, GM answered with three in the bottom of the frame
as senior Troy Peiffer (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford), junior
Anthony Capella (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic), and sophomore
Chris Corkery (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) each
drove in a run. Zach Lutz and Jason Ziegler each collected two hits
for Alvernia.
Up 4-2 in the seventh and with the tying run at
the plate, Daley got out of a jam with a double play to end the
game for Gwynedd (13-8, 5-1 PAC).
Thomas picked up his team-leading fourth win of
the season in game two, lasting into the sixth, in a 6-4 victory.
Sophomore Mark Mattes (Doylestown, Pa./C.B. East) and freshman
Tim Hoban (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) each went 2-for-3
with two runs scored. Mattes also knocked in two.
The Griffins rallied from a 4-2 deficit with three
runs in the fourth and an insurance run in the six.
Sophomore Kyle Reynolds (Darby, Pa./Cardinal
O'Hara) picked up his first save allowing just two hits and fanning
one batter in a inning and a third of work.
Ziegler went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Crusaders
(11-9, 2-4 PAC) in game two.
The Griffins host nationally-ranked Rowan here in
non-league action this Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
